Following are descriptions (tasting notes, ratings, pictures) from various tasting events. Note: OB means "Own Bottling" - in other words, a bottling produced by the distiller or its owning company, as opposed to bottling by an independent vendor of spirits (such as Glenhaven, Whyte & Whyte, Gordon & MacPhail, Cadenhead, Signatory, etc.)
Note the difference between Rank and Medal columns; Rank is assessed purely on numerical score averaged across all the tasters; Medal takes into account the order in which individual tasters placed each malt. Thus, Rank and Medal may disagree as to which was the best whisky, however, medal ratings more accurately reflect (remove) biases to higher / lower scores by individual tasters.
A blind tasting of eight moderately to heavily peated whiskies, distilled in the 1970s. All eight whiskies were presented simultaneously, and nosed / tasted for approximately 1 1/2 hours prior to scoring by seven tasters (only six of whom contributed scores/rankings). The whiskies were scored on a ten point scale. The group was very consistent in rating the top whisky, which turned out to be the top scoring whisky from a previous blind tasting (Night of Laphroaig - yet to be posted on this website.). However, the next three places were quite close; the third place whisky in points actually scored the silver medal. The Caol Ila was also the top-ranking whisky from a previous blind tasting (Ides of Caol Ila - yet to be posted on this website.)

A blind tasting of nine different expressions of Glenfarclas by six tasters. All nine whiskies were presented simultaneously, and nosed / tasted for approximately 1 1/2 hours prior to scoring. The whiskies were scored on a ten point scale. The group was pretty consistent in rating the top two whiskies, and only slightly less so regarding the next two. Opinions were more varied regarding the remaining whiskies.

An open tasting of seven different malts from Campbeltown, plus two others, by seven tasters. There was one blind (known only to one of the seven tasters while tasting) - this was the Glen Goyne 21. It's identity was revealed after all tasters had recorded their impressions and scores. All nine whiskies were presented simultaneously, and nosed / tasted for approximately 1 1/2 hours prior to scoring. Scoring system was the same as for Glenfarclas Forever (above).
